Carter and Meri met on August 24, 2014 when Meri went to Bob Ward’s to buy a fishing license for her family’s annual trip to the Gallatin river. Carter blatantly flirted with her in front of her dad and Meri left the store wondering who he was and figuring she would never see him again.

Two weeks later, Meri ran into some friends at a Grizzly football game. One of her friends’ friends looked familiar, but she couldn’t figure out how she knew him. After much discussion, they finally realized Meri had bought a fishing license from him two weeks previously, and that person turned out to be Carter.

Carter and Meri will have been together for four years on December 8, 2018. In those years, they’ve adventured around Montana together, and then across the country for Carter’s career in the U.S. Navy.

On May 13, 2018, the day after Meri’s graduation from the University of Montana, Carter proposed to Meri at her family’s cabin on Flathead Lake. Together with their friends, Eric and Taylor, they celebrated with two bottles of champagne and a riveting round of cornhole before returning to Missoula to spend Mother’s Day with their families.

Meri still has the fishing license Carter sold her the day they met.
