We know it’s not everyday you are planning a wedding, and it is unlikely you know what to expect when planning your flowers. From budget, to design to floral selection, there is seriously SO MUCH that goes into making your big day floral perfect. We all know that the design and quality of your wedding flowers can make a lasting impression of your wedding day. As flower nerds ourselves, we prioritize wedding day flowers because they are almost our favorite part of the wedding day (second only to marrying our lovely clients). Our friend and amazing florist, Kristen with Agile Goat Flower Farm and Design Studio has been nice enough to share the secret sauce of wedding flowers with us. As a flower farmer and wedding floral designer, she wanted to share some things to consider when selecting your wedding flowers and florist.

1. PINTEREST : GREAT FOR INSPIRATION, NOT REPLICATION

Everyone knows Pinterest is an AMAZING resource for gaining insight and inspiration regarding the latest floral trends. As floral designers, we find it an indispensable tool for getting on the same page with our clients. We know our clients will have already pulled together ideas before we meet, so we always ask them to share what has caught their eye. However, there is one major drawback to using Pinterest. The photos don’t always represent reality. With so many photo editing options, the colors of flowers are easily distorted to something unrealistic. While I would love to have a magic wand to transform a flower into whatever shade of pink my client desires, the reality is nature only produces certain shades. So be original, trust your designer and let them have some creative freedom. You won’t be disappointed!

2. FLORIST SELECTION : NOT ALL FLORISTS ARE CREATED EQUAL. SELECT ONE THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU.

When choosing a florist for your wedding, it’s not just about availability and budget. Every florist has their own style, personality and talent. Choose the florist that fits with yours. But first, know your style. Do you prefer a natural flowing bouquet or a tight traditional style? Are you ditching the bouquet all together? Figuring out yourself first will help point you in the right direction for choosing your ideal florist. Peruse websites, ask for examples of their work, read reviews. Ultimately, don’t be afraid to interview your potential florist. Are they a traditional florist or a farmer-florist? Where do they source their flowers? Beyond just the flowers, what types of arrangements do they make? Are you looking for large installations, unique floral jewelry or more sustainable options such as live plants? These are all critical questions when selecting the right florist for you.

3. SEASON MATTERS : PEONIES IN AUGUST, TULIPS IN SEPTEMBER?

While we all wish every flower bloomed year-round, this just isn’t true. With a global floral industry, we are able to source from all over the world. However, keep in mind how far a flower has to travel out of water. How well will it last on your wedding day. How much will you have to pay to account for shipping, and will it arrive too damaged to use. For the most vibrant, healthy and sustainable flowers, source locally which means selecting what is in season.

4. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

Do florists have a special price just for wedding flowers? While it is tempting to think this is true, the price you pay for wedding flowers not only covers the price of the flowers, which is rarely in-expensive, you are also paying for a work of art. And let’s not forget what goes into producing that unique flower you fell in love with. Maybe it only produces a few blooms a year or maybe it is very uncommon. Long story short, most couples want something that is unique to them, something that speaks to their own style. This is rarely found with everyday flowers and an everyday florist.

5. DIY ISN’T RECOMMENDED

With so many DIY floral designs available online, anyone can design exquisite wedding flowers, right? While this is how I fell into floral design, it didn’t turn out perfect the first or second or even third time. Floral design is an art, and with any art, it takes time and practice. From floral care to design skills, there is so much that goes into creating even the most seemingly simplistic arrangement. And don’t forget about time and timing. It’s your wedding day, you don’t want to stress about managing every little detail, much less tackling something completely new.

6. THINK OF YOUR FLOWERS WHEN PLANNING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY

Who doesn’t love an outdoor wedding to capture that picturesque backdrop? Flowers, that’s who. This may seem counterintuitive, but once a flower has been cut from the plant, it is no longer in love with being outside. Instead it’s ready to find shelter. So don’t expect your flowers to last for hours and hours especially in the middle of the summer. Everyone wants Pinterest worthy pictures of those gorgeous blooms, so plan accordingly. Some flowers are better able to withstand heat and sunshine while others simply can’t. There’s a reason everyday flowers are just that, everyday. These are the blooms that can hold up to days of travel out of water in variable temperatures. Those gorgeous, wedding worthy flowers are often a little more delicate. Consider the amount of time you have your bouquet out of water prior to the ceremony especially if the weather is windy, warm or sunny. Alternatively, you can always purchase a second bouquet.

7. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

Hoop bouquets, floral jewelry, dried flowers. It’s not all roundy-moundy traditional bouquets these days. Want a gorgeous photo op? Consider the unexpected. The options for wedding floral designs are virtually limitless. Have your floral designer create a stunning installation piece that your guests will be talking about for years to come. Or use dried flowers that your guests can keep for years to come. If you or your florist can dream it up, it almost undoubtedly can happen.

8. EXPECT TO PAY 10-15% OF YOUR WEDDING BUDGET ON FLOWERS

Really love flowers? Then you are looking at 20% or more. With that said, the multitude of local flower farms and floral designers make your options for staying on budget within reach. Looking for the least expensive option, find a source of bulk flowers. Start by contacting a local flower farm. You may find them online, through word of mouth or at your local farmers market. You may even see their products at your local grocery store. Want some help with your floral designs but don’t need The Works, look for options where you can have a family member pickup. While this option will undoubtedly have limits, it will save you money and still provide gorgeous, professionally designed floral arrangements.

9. GREENERY ISN’T CHEAP

Everyone is in love with those lush garlands all over Pinterest, but even though they are just greenery, it takes an abundance of our little green friends to pull off this look. Not to mention, that truly eye-catching foliage is anything but cheap.

You are hiring a wedding professional that has done this dozens if not hundreds or even thousands of times, trust them! Let them make recommendations, be open, be flexible, but most importantly, choose the florist that is right for you and know you are in good hands.
